ENACCT Offers Clinical Trial Advocate Training
Although cancer clinical trials are essential to making progress in cancer care, nationally, less than five percent of all eligible cancer patients take part in cancer clinical trials. Rates of participation are even lower among medically underserved populations. The barriers to improving clinical trials awareness and participation are experienced not only by community members and patients, but among primary care providers, trial investigators and their staff.
The Education Network to Advance Cancer Clinical Trials (ENACCT) offers community centered approaches to cancer clinical trials that can make a difference in addressing these challenges. ENACCT is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to improve access to cancer clinical trials through education and collaboration with communities, health care providers and researchers.
Using an evidence-based approach, ENACCT has developed a variety of trainings for community leaders, primary care providers and clinical research teams, to improve awareness of cancer clinical trials and increase accrual rates, particularly within racial/ethnically diverse and underserved populations. With ENACCT’s unique expertise on expanding community access to clinical trials, our programs have reached over 5000 individuals in 6 communities nationwide in the last five years.
In addition to customized courses offered live, ENACCT currently provides 3 free introductory courses online. “Your Role in Cancer Clinical Trials” is a series of free, one hour e-learning courses, which enables patient advocates/ community leaders, primary care providers, and cancer clinical trial staff to spread the word about cancer clinical trials, to promote greater access and participation.
All courses include an introduction to cancer clinical trials, interactive lectures with slides, audio narration and action planning. Courses for primary care providers and research staff offer continuing education credit for physicians, nurses and social workers.
