Help Protect NIH Research Funding: Register Today for Hill Day 2017

AACIís annual Hill Day is set for Thursday, May 4, 2017, in Washington, DC. AACI will once again partner with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to bring advocates to Capitol Hill and request stable, predictable investments in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI).

With NIH and NCI funding under threat, there is no better time to visit Washington and highlight the achievements of cancer centers and request a robust federal investment for biomedical research. The presidentís recommendation for Fiscal Year 2018 would cut funding to the NIH by $5.8 billion, or approximately 19 percent, which translates to a cut of nearly $1 billion in funding to the NCI. These drastic cuts to the NIH and NCI would significantly reduce each budget to the equivalent of FY 2002 funding levels and has the potential to impact cancer centerís ability to bring novel therapies to patients.

While cancer centers were encouraged by the funding stream included in the 21st Century Cures Act, the fund is not a sufficient alternative to appropriations for the NIH and NCI and would not cover the extreme budget reductions proposed by the president. Additionally, the federal government has yet to fund the NIH and NCI for FY 2017, as it continues to operate at FY 2016 levels.

Please join your colleagues in Washington as we call on Congress to continue prioritizing funding for the NIH and the NCI for the overall health and economic well-being of our nation.

Registration and accommodations can be found here. Register today as the room block closes April 14. Please contact Jennifer Pegher with questions.
