UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center

March 13, 2025
The University of California Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) and the UC Davis School of Medicine are seeking a distinguished board certified clinical trialist to serve as Director of the Early Phase Clinical Trials Program (Director) at UCDCCC. This is a unique opportunity to lead a high performing and mature clinical trials program that is housed within a national leader in cancer research and care.

UCDCCC was established in 1991 and, having achieved National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in 2002, stands as a beacon of excellence in cancer care and research. Serving a diverse 19-county region in inland Northern California, home to over five million people, it remains the sole NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in this area. Additionally, the center serves as an NCI National Clinical Trials Network Lead Academic Participating Site, an NCI Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network, and a member of the University of California Cancer Consortium. Each year, the center provides care to more than 100,000 adults and children, offering access to over 200 active clinical trials.

Its research endeavors are robust, with over 240 scientists engaged in over 300 projects across 43 departments and seven schools, including the School of Veterinary Medicine. These efforts are supported by $58 million in research funding. The Center’s commitment to reducing cancer disparities is evident through its community outreach and education programs, aiming to improve outcomes across its catchment area. With a multidisciplinary team of top oncologists, researchers, and specialists, the UCDCCC remains at the forefront of personalized cancer care and innovative research.

The Director will lead and oversee the development, implementation and execution of early phase clinical trials within UCDCCC, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and regulatory requirements. This leader will seek to expand the clinical trials portfolio, both from industry sponsors and investigator-initiated trials.

The Director will formulate the future strategy of the program and collaborate with investigators, sponsors, and regulatory agencies to advance innovative therapies from preclinical research to first-in-human studies. The Director will ensure robust trial operations, including patient recruitment, data integrity, and compliance with FDA, NIH, and institutional guidelines. Additionally, they will supervise clinical research teams, mentor junior investigators, and foster a multidisciplinary approach to trial design and execution. Working within a complex academic oncology environment, the Director will partner closely with other leaders across the Cancer Center and associated advisory boards.
